‘Thank the devil’ could be an attempt to diss Bugzy’s dependence upon others for hype, implying that the only way he’s been able to rise to fame so fast is by selling his soul and receiving boosts from higher powers; so any commercial success he enjoys now should be attributed to the attention he’s received from others.

Following up with ‘then me’ reveals that Chip is the metaphorical devil, whose popularity Bugzy has been feeding off in order to blow up.

“Peak”“ is a track by Tinie Tempah, Stormzy and Bugzy Malone, released in May 2015 as Tinie’s only response to the whole beef (up to this point).

Chip was confused to see Stormzy on the track, having collaborated just months earlier on “I’m Fine”, the lead single from his EP. He sent an indirect tweet questioning Stormzy’s motives, but they’re now on good terms.

Therefore two out of three people on the track are “pagans” according to Chip – Bugzy and Tinie. Stormz is all good though!

Chip thinks that he built Bugzy’s whole career with “Pepper Riddim” and “The End” – Bugzy even got into the UK charts and Chip reckons none of this would’ve happened if it wasn’t for him.

Chip is the self-proclaimed “grime scene saviour” as stated in his classic track “Who Are You?”. He even named the opening track on his debut album “Saviour”, so the bar keeps coming up throughout his career.

Chip doesn’t think Bugzy’s bringing anything new to the scene – in fact, he sees himself as responsible for “fathering” Bugzy’s career due to all this beef. “Big baby” also suggests that Bugzy is immature and inferior to Chip.

One of the areas Bugzy chose to mention a lot in his diss tracks was the fact that Chip had a brief pop career, with his albums I Am Chipmunk and Transition both performing well in the UK charts and featuring pop singers on the hooks. Bugzy accused Chip of selling out because he started on grime, went to pop and came back to grime.

However, Bugzy was more than willing to jump on a feature for Tinie Tempah’s “Peak”, a three-man track combining brags with shots at Chip. Tinie could be considered a pop artist, so Bugzy’s doing the very thing he was criticising Chip for!

Bugzy has criticised Chip for failing to stay true to grime, straying into both pop and rap, whilst still maintaining that he is the ‘grime scene saviour’.

However some of the beats from Bugzy’s new EP are rap beats rather than grime beats, notably on his song “Pain”, and here Chip points out Bugzy’s own disloyalty to grime, and apparent hypocrisy.

Of course, one of Bugzy’s most valid points was that Chip had ironically made a song called “School of Grime” with a trap beat – arguably a way more blatant mistake than Bugzy’s own deviation away from the genre.

Like Chip, Tinie Tempah has also found mainstream success however Chip accuses Tinie of now being unable to spit on a more grime-based tune and thus using or “pimping” Bugzy Malone to restore his own credibility through their collaboration on “It’s Peak”.

Bugzy’s Walk With Me Ep he has a song entitled Watch Your Mouth, The track has plenty of sly digs that Chip is referring to-

During Chip’s original statement that set this whole conflict alight – he mentioned having attained 4 B grade and 5 A grade GCSEs as a product of the “government education system”. This led onto a criticism of Tinie Tempah for failing to highlight serious issues in the community during a visit to 10 Downing Street.

Chip has now responded, implying that Bugzy Malone’s critcism of his GCSE grade achievements is ridiculous when compared to Bugzy Malone’s past as a drug dealer.

In M.E.N Bugzy says “Feeling like a donut cos I’d already been stabbed by the time I was Year 9”.

This could be seen as Chip pointing out how bad Bugzy’s similes are – donuts don’t really conjure up imposing imagery. Bugzy literally called himself a sugary baked pastry and expected us to be impressed. Chip is now throwing this in his face.

Gyal is slang for girl or gal. Chip is implying Bugzy’s obsession with him is a little homosexual.

After releasing “My Bruddaz”, the lead single from his new EP, Chip laid low for a while before releasing this diss track. This shows that he isn’t in a desperate rush to put music out, preferring instead to strategically bide his time.

Chip has nothing against the Manchester grime scene – he’s willing to cosign other MCs and recommends that his listeners check out 17-year-old MC Geko instead of Bugzy.

Geko was in the USG collective alongside K-Koke. He later went on to become the youngest ever MC to do a Fire in the Booth – you can read an interview with him here.

To add further depth to the bar, it was actually Geko who suggested that Bugzy should be nominated for a MOBO and got the attention of the MOBO Twitter account. Chip could also suggest here that Geko’s a better candidate for the award.

Bugzy’s entire career has been through uploads on GRM Daily, Link Up TV and JDZmedia. Chip suggests that Bugzy puts something on his own YouTube channel to prove that he can get just as many views without the help of popular networks.

On “Relegation Riddim”, Bugzy Malone mocked Chip’s haircut for looking like video game character Sonic the Hedgehog:

Sonic Boom is also the special move used by Guile in Street Fighter, that being Chip’s favourite character in the game, as he said during his Dine Daily. Chip states that “Light Work” is like the special move, causing significant damage in a battle, in this case the clash between Chip and Bugzy.

Chip may also be referring to Bugzy’s 2012 track titled “Sonic Boom”. Chip also released a track titled “Sonic Boom” on Christmas Day, 2015.

Chip’s diss track “Pepper Riddim”, released in March 2015, responded to criticisms by Bugzy Malone, Big Narstie, DJ Cameo and Saskilla. He also fired shots at Devilman. Being the household name he is, this track turned a lot of heads and basically created all-out war with diss tracks aimed at Chip being thrown left, right and centre.

But the track wasn’t just a personal beef – it symbolised a coming together of the grime scene for some high-profile drama, something which we haven’t really seen for years. It united grime fans and everyone was talking about it. UK heavyweights Skepta, Tinie Tempah and Stormzy even got involved. The track, and the ensuing beef, gave the little-known Manchester MC Bugzy Malone a platform for the world to hear him. And it got him thousands more followers as well as an EP in the top 10 of the UK Albums Chart.

“Fuck Radio” was a grime DVD released in July 2008.

Seven years later, Chip states that he’s still a problem for other artists.

The article contains a video of his friend Lukey, at the end of the video they’re saying “It’s light work today”. That’s most likely the “energy” that Chip is referring to.

0161 is the dialing code for the city of Manchester. Bugzy Malone often uses “0161!” as an ad-lib as a way of paying homage to his hometown.

Chip’s getting tired of hearing this, and sees it as ironic because Bugzy signed to Charlie Sloth’s London-based label Grimey Limey to release his EP. If he was really supporting 0161, he’d release it on a Manchester independent label.

Chip once again emphasises that he’s from the “School of Grime” and it’s part of grime scene culture to send diss tracks so he feels a need to revive this beef.

He references the title of Bugzy’s diss “Relegation Riddim”. Chip will do more than just knock Bugzy “out of his league”, he’ll embarrass him and damage his reputation as a credible MC. He’s seeked to do exactly that on this track, because he’s accusing Bugzy of being formulaic and predictable.

Chip implies that whenever he disses someone, he brings them attention so he finds himself in a tricky situation…

Does he ignore a diss and allow people to think he’s weak or does he respond and bring more shine to his adversary?

Sidenote: Catch 22 is also the name of Tinchy Stryder’s 2009 album, on which Chip featured on the track “We Got Dem”.
