AKA: Elijah Naughton, Saturdaymoonlight1

Elijah Amir Naughton (December 3, 2002 — March 21, 2024), professionally known as zodiak, was an American recording artist from Minneapolis, Minnesota.

zodiak’s music blended various genres, including hip-hop, trap, alternative trap, alternative rock and hyperpop. His lyrics touched on themes of addiction, fashion, relationships, and at times carried something almost spiritual to them. His project, Not Safe For Work, widely known as NSFW, cemented his name in the underground.

Growing up, his grandfather introduced him to music early, Gorillaz on repeat by age 2. But it wasn’t until he was 12 that everything clicked, after seeing Tyler, The Creator talk about just downloading a program and making beats. Elijah did the same, opened FL Studio, started producing, and eventually started recording his own music.

zodiak, alongside amir.pr0d, are widely credited as founding figures of the underground subgenre known as New Jazz, a sound characterized by gritty, unorthodox production, heavy bass, and strong influences drawn from early 2000s hip-hop, later popularized by Lunchbox.

Outside of music, Elijah had a deep obsession with fashion, the way he looked was hard to ignore, and Hedi Slimane noticed. He personally invited him to walk in his Celine AW23 runway shows in Los Angeles and Paris.

On March 15, 2024, zodiak released his final album, ++ on SoundCloud. It was confirmed via his Spotify profile page that the album ++ would release on “all plats soon”.

Six days later, on March 21, 2024, Elijah’s family and his friends announced his unexpected passing due to a drug overdose. He was 21 years old.
