Nat Ćmiel (born December 16, 1997 in Singapore), better known by their stage name yeule, is, in their own words, a non-binary painter, musician, performance artist and cyborg entity. Their name is derived from a Final Fantasy character, explained in an interview with Dazed:

The character of Nsu-Yeul in XIII-2 is a seeress (prophet) with a fragmented soul, (each fragment) belongs to one lifetime. She reincarnates in the game as you go through the timeline of history. At the end, you meet her last reincarnation in the void beyond, and she accepts the destruction and ends the reincarnating life cycle of her soul. Her fate connotes the acceptance of mortality — right here, right now, you’re born again with your consciousness in fragments. It’s as though inside your heart you can feel something from your past life and it guides you. Perhaps before my life, there was another soul (that existed) before me — exactly like me, a replica.

Based in London, the Singaporean-born songwriter, singer, and producer-artist has been making thoughtful electronic music reflective of their nomadic upbringing since 2012, citing influence in Avril Lavigne, The Smashing Pumpkins and My Chemical Romance.

Spending their early childhood in Singapore, Ćmiel first started playing the piano when they were six, finding themselves mesmerised by the soundtracks of Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts; leaving the game running to try and play it on the piano before they eventually took up the guitar and drums.

I always had an inclination towards anything of the sonic medium since I was very young. In my early creative days I started as a painter, and then grew towards crafting soundscapes to echo the dream-like realities I had pretended to live in all the time.

During Ćmiel’s adolescent years, they lived as a “hikikomori”, struggling with the feeling of being misplaced and lack of identity, impacting many of their ideas of self alongside a deep connection to virtual escapism. Ćmiel eventually developed a deep connection to the internet, finding people who understood them more than their real life peers.

yeule’s debut self-titled EP was released on March 3, 2014, when they were just 16, introducing their dreamy, glitch-pop sound to the world, following up with their second EP, Pathos, in late 2016, dedicated to their friend, David Singh. Their final release as an independent artist, Coma, was released on September 27, 2017, self described as “an album to commemorate the people [they]’d lost”.

On July 17, 2019, yeule signed to New York-based label Bayonet Records who released their debut independently produced and written record, Serotonin II, on October 25, 2019, described as “the stifling psychological haze turned into perfume.”

Ćmiel’s sophomore album, Glitch Princess was first teased with the single “My Name is Nat Ćmiel,” released in late 2020, with the full album being released on February 4, 2022, featuring in Pitchfork’s Best New Music section.

On May 10, 2023, yeule returned with a new single for their new song “Sulky Baby,” alongside an announcement that they had signed to the Ninja Tune label which released softscars on September 22, 2023.

yeule’s fourth studio album, Evangelic Girl Is a Gun, was released on May 30, 2025, charting at a peak position of 18 on the UK Indie charts, continuing the darker sound of their previous album.
