Weather Systems is the latest musical endeavor from Daniel Cavanagh, former Anathema co-founder and multi-instrumentalist, alongside former Anathema drummer and producer Daniel Cardoso.

Music has always been a medium for transcending ordinary conversation, allowing us to express emotions and truths that words alone can’t capture. For Daniel Cavanagh, this form of communication has been central to his artistic journey. Over three decades, as lead guitarist, songwriter, and co-founder of Anathema, Daniel touched the hearts of listeners worldwide, crafting albums that resonated deeply and performing in iconic venues across the globe. Now, with Weather Systems, he embarks on the next chapter of his creative evolution, taking audiences further than ever before with the band’s debut album, slated for release in 2024.

The seeds for Weather Systems were planted in 2019, when Daniel began working on what was intended to be Anathema’s next album. Two years earlier, the UK-based band had reached critical and commercial heights with The Optimist, earning “Album of the Year” at the Progressive Music Awards, landing their second UK Top 40 chart entry, and making waves on year-end lists from AXS, Classic Rock, Metal Hammer, and The Independent, among others. However, as he entered the studio with a collection of intricate, emotionally charged songs, Anathema went on indefinite hiatus in 2020. Much of what would become Weather Systems' debut, Ocean Without A Shore, was born from those sessions.

To bring this vision to life, Daniel reunited with The Optimist producer Tony Doogan [Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian] and drummer Daniel Cardoso, who also serves as Live Musical Director. Daniel’s contribution to the album spans vocals, piano, keyboards, guitar, bass, and programming, with additional vocal performances by Soraia, Petter Carlsen, Oliwia Krettek, and Paul Kearns.

As always, Daniel’s music aims to form deep connections. “Anathema never had ‘casual fans,’” he reflects. “The music was intense and emotional, touching people in profound ways. I’ve always respected that bond, and I strive to create music that resonates in the hearts and souls of listeners. I hope it brings healing.”
