Unwound is an American post-hardcore band formed in 1988 in Tumwater and Olympia, Washington. The current lineup includes Justin Trosper (vocals, guitar), Jared Warren (bass), Sara Lund (drums), and Scott Seckington (guitar).

Originally started as Giant Henry by Trosper, bassist Vern Rumsey, and drummer Brandt Sandeno, the band became Unwound after Lund replaced Sandeno in 1992. From 1993 to 2002, the trio of Trosper, Lund, and Rumsey released seven albums and numerous singles while touring extensively. Their dissonant, experimental sound—blending noise rock and post-hardcore—earned them a strong cult following and ties to the independent label Kill Rock Stars.

Their critically acclaimed final album, Leaves Turn Inside You (2001), marked a shift toward post-rock and avant-garde styles. Following a troubled tour and Rumsey’s health struggles, Unwound disbanded in 2002. Reunion attempts stalled until after Rumsey’s death in 2020. In 2022, the band reformed for a 2023 tour in his memory.

Unwound remains a highly influential 1990s band, praised for their DIY ethic and genre-defying sound. The A.V. Club once called them “the best band of the ‘90s.”
