Back in January of 2018 David Bolton, under the stage name Synodic X, would release his
first single entitled Whisper (Water). Its lyrics touch on a currently unnamed
character who would later appear again in the song “i wanna disappear”.
The character is trapped in Hell and unable to escape, although trying to. This concept of
Hell is the entire essence of Synodic X’s debut album, “O”, an album touching
on David’s mental health and his struggle with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts on
songs like “Carnival”, “i wanna disappear”, and “I HATE MY MIND AND I GUESS IT’S
MUTUAL”, others focusing on the aforementioned heaven and hell concept like “O”, and
“Whisper”, whilst almost the rest of David’s discography showing a passion for simply
experimenting musically, considering a whopping 10/12 of O (11/13 if you wanna get
technical) is either purposefully meaningless or without lyrics to begin with.
Some of the more experimental aspects of “O” come in the form of “The Light At The End of
My Mind (Isolation)”, with David having this to say about the song, “These lyrics make no
sense. They don’t have to! That’s the beauty of nobody paying attention to them! They
could be talking about how the KKK is great but nobody cares because they’re just here for
the (sound) of it, That’s all. I want you to think, to pay attention. So pay attention.”
David said about the song “Psychoneurotic Battle Salt”, “Psychoneurotic Battle Salt is a
song played in a battle, a weird battle. A type of fight where crazy people fight. It makes no
sense, but I wanted to make a dance type song that also could be used if, like,
Chuck-E-Cheese punched Ronald McDonald. Weird people who would never fight, I don’t
know. It’s stupid.”
Going back to the song “Whisper” in particular is what I’ve been waiting to talk about
though. The song’s lyrics and musical structure and sound are what describe Synodic X as
a whole. The lyric, “Then I see a person who was here before, a demon, a monster of
sorcery. Then I blink seven times and I realize it’s me.” could have several meanings. It
could be apart of the Hell storyline established earlier, a character seeing the devil for the
seventh time, the first six times being in his own reflection. He sees himself as the devil. It
could also be taken in the mental health aspect, somebody thinking of themselves as a
monster, a terrible person. The lyric in the second verse, “Then I’m lost in the sound of the
music and I choose it, but I chose the wrong song, and I decided to sing along,” in David’s
own words, means “Song meaning faith, When he was alive he was so lost in the sound of
Heaven, that he never even cared to learn about it anymore. He accidentally chose the
wrong path which led him to Hell.”
The song “Carnival” explores more of the mental health side, telling the listener to, “Take
me out of this carnival,” carnival perhaps meaning life, a theory supported by a lyric further
on in the song. “Help me die,”
As for David’s future in music, his second album, currently titled “SX2” has two released
songs. The 11th track is “Locked Away”, a song also hidden on “O” as the 13th track. The
5th track is “Tyler Joseph”, an ode to the titular lead singer of twenty one pilots and the song
“Kitchen Sink”. The confirmed upcoming songs that are not on “SX2” are, “Nasty!”, “Love
Bugz”, “-It Looks-”, “RRROLL”, “Break For It,” and “Candy”.
