Sublime
Sublime is an American ska punk, reggae rock, and alternative rock band from Long Beach, California, formed in 1988. The original lineup consisted of Bradley Nowell (vocals and guitar), Eric Wilson (bass), and Bud Gaugh (drums). Lou Dog, Nowell’s Dalmatian, became the band’s beloved mascot and a recognizable part of Sublime’s identity. Michael “Miguel” Happoldt and Marshall Goodman (“Ras MG”) also contributed to and co-wrote several Sublime songs.
The band’s rise was cut short when Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose on May 25, 1996, in San Francisco, California, just one week after marrying his wife, Troy Dendekker. Following his death, Sublime disbanded. However, the release of their self-titled third album later that year brought the band widespread success. Hit singles such as “What I Got,” “Santeria,” “Wrong Way,” “Doin' Time,” and “April 29, 1992 (Miami)“ received heavy radio airplay and helped establish Sublime as one of the most influential bands of the 1990s.
Sublime released three studio albums—40oz. to Freedom (1992), Robbin’ the Hood (1994), and Sublime (1996)—along with live albums, compilation albums, EPs, singles, and a box set. Although their first two albums built a strong underground following, the self-titled album became their commercial breakthrough, reaching No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and producing “What I Got,” the band’s only No. 1 hit on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. The band has sold more than 17 million records worldwide.
In 2009, Wilson and Gaugh attempted to reunite with singer Rome Ramirez. Legal issues prevented them from using the Sublime name, leading to the formation of Sublime with Rome, which released three studio albums and toured extensively before disbanding at the end of 2024.
In 2023, Sublime officially reunited with founding members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh alongside Jakob Nowell, Bradley Nowell’s son, who took over lead vocals and guitar. The reunited band made its highly anticipated return to the stage in 2024 and began recording new music, marking the first time the Sublime name had been used for new material since Bradley Nowell’s death. In 2026, the band released Until the Sun Explodes, their first studio album in nearly 30 years.
