Shadow Project was an American deathrock band based out of San Francisco, California. It was formed by vocalist Rozz Williams of Christian Death, and background vocalist Eva O of Super Heroines.

The band’s name was taken from “the International Shadow Project,” an anti-nuclear art movement initiated in the early 1980s. Volunteers apart of the movement would trace shadowy silhouettes across cities worldwide. These were meant to mimic similar figures left behind in Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the United States’ use of nuclear weapons. The goal of the movement is to spread awareness about the effects nuclear warfare could have, and have had on society.

The band started in 1987 out of boredom by a newly married Rozz Williams and Eva O. Rozz, who had just left Christian Death to pursue more experimental art, and Eva’s last project, Super Heroines had just disbanded. Shadow Project recruited Jill Emery of Super Heroines on bass guitar, Thomas Morgan on drums and Paris Sadonis on keyboards. They then signed to Triple X Records and release their self titled album in 1991.

In 1992, Thomas Morgan was replaced by Peter Tomlinson and Shadow Project released Dreams for the Dying, which was recorded during the Los Angeles riots of that year. Jill left the band to purse other projects, afterwards being replaced with Donato Canzonieri.

Shadow Project broke up after their 1993 American tour. Eva, followed by Paris left the band to focus on Eva’s solo career. This ultimately finished the band as a whole. Rozz, not wanting to disappoint fans who bought tickets in to Shadow Project in Germany, continued the tour with his other band Daucus Karota.

Shortly after Shadow Project’s break up, Rozz and Eva divorced, and Rozz’s addiction to heroin grew more concerning for the people around him.

In 1997, Shadow Project reunited to record their album From the Heart. Production on From the Heart was cut short on April 1st, 1998 after Rozz committed suicide, due to heroin addiction, alcoholism and bi-polar disorder.

In 2005, a compilation EP of original recordings of old Shadow Project songs released titled the Original Tapes 1988.
