Second Function is a Swiss alternative rock band from Zurich and Basel that was founded in 2003.

Second Function was already founded in earlier years by Flo (vocals, guitar), Sascha (bass) and Monti (drums), but experienced a new beginning after the departure of drummer Monti and the entry of Luki (drums) and subsequently named this date as the founding year.

After playing about 50 concerts, the band dared to record a demo in 2005 and released the album Recording Session 05, which helped them to a Swiss support tour with Die Happy and a support show with Life Of Agony.

During this time, the band already benefited from endorsements with Vans, Carhartt and Famous Stars And Straps.

Further demo recordings were followed in 2006 by the EP A shape Of Things To Come, recorded with CH cult metallers V.O. Pulver and Franky Winkelmann from the band Gurd. This EP was sold and distributed exclusively at concerts.

In 2008, they decided to record their debut album Times Stops Running with platinum-selling Luk Zimmermann, known as the mastermind behind the successful Swiss bands Lunik and Mina, as producer. The result was a varied, rocking and modern album that contains 13 songs from the band’s history and was distributed to music stores via Leech Redda / 808 Records.

The release of the album Time Stops Running was followed in February 2009 by a tour of 13 concerts in Japan, where Second Function were able to present and promote their album to an enthusiastic audience. This was followed in summer 2009 by a series of concerts in the Swiss open air scene.

In 2010 the three guys retired to work on another album. Dry, Crisp & Bittersweet was recorded in the fall of 2010 and released on October 28, 2011.

Second Function experienced impressive moments during their travels across Europe, Japan, and Russia, as well as during recording studio sessions in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Germany. “Individuals” was released in 2018, showcasing the band’s musical evolution from divergent views to shared convictions. With their EP “Feed Yourself” in 2016, the Swiss rockers extensively toured Europe, opening for acts like Life of Agony (USA) and performing with bands such as Biffy Clyro (UK), Dog Eat Dog (USA), and Arcane Roots (UK). With over 300 concerts, including the Vans OFF the WALL Tour and the Greenfield Festival, they emphasize their insatiable hunger for music.

Renowned producers like Luk Zimmermann and John Mitchell worked on their albums “Time Stops Running” and “Dry, Crisp & Bittersweet.” The band embodies conviction, persistence, fun, and passion. During the COVID-19 hiatus, the band had to suspend their concerts. Nevertheless, they continued to write and record new songs. In early 2023, marking the 15th anniversary of their debut album “Time Stops Running,” the three musicians decided to reunite with their original producer, Luk Zimmermann. As if no time had passed, they met with him in his studio in Bern to record new songs.

“The Driveway” was released in 2023 as the first single, marking the beginning of a creative phase that played into the artists’ hands in terms of songwriting. Alongside “The Driveway,” “Moonshine,” and “Patterns” were created during this special time. Together, these tracks form a new palette of songs characterized by their rawness, directness, and honesty, shining both on record and in live performances.
