Rudy Currence
Rudy Currence, born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, comes from a musical family deeply rooted in the church. His father, Rev. Ruperd G. Currence Jr., is a pastor at Souls For Christ Church, and his mother, Patricia, is a fan of Michael Jackson and Motown. Rudy’s early musical influences include Prince, the Bee Gees, and the Carpenters, thanks to his parents' diverse taste in music. Rudy and his brother, known as Mykal Star, grew up playing and singing in church, which significantly shaped Rudy’s musical journey.
Rudy attended Northwestern High School and later majored in classical music at Furman University, where he was on a scholarship for classical piano and voice. His education expanded his musical repertoire, blending classical training with his gospel roots. Rudy’s early career saw him performing at local events and even winning on “Showtime at the Apollo".
Rudy Currence has achieved significant recognition in the music industry as a singer, songwriter, producer, and keyboardist. He co-wrote the Grammy-nominated song “Sunday A.M.” for Karen Clark Sheard and “Sophisticated Lady” for Mya’s album “Moodring.” His single “I Belong Here,” released in 2020, topped the Billboard Gospel Airplay Chart and resonated deeply during the COVID-19 pandemic and the civil unrest following George Floyd’s death. Rudy also partnered with the Kawai Piano Company, gaining widespread attention through his “Kawai Chronicles” cover videos, one of which amassed over a million views on YouTube. Rudy’s work on Lecrae’s album “Gravity” earned him a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album and a Dove Award. His single “Testimony” reached the Top 20 on the Billboard Gospel charts, further solidifying his impact in the gospel music scene.
Beyond music, Rudy launched a docu-series called “TESTimony Tuesdays,” featuring stories of people overcoming various life challenges, highlighting the power of faith and perseverance.
