Roll Deep
AKA: Roll Deep Crew, Roll Deep Entourage
Roll Deep are an English grime crew formed in 2002 with the release of the song “Terrible”. Many of its members were neighbours in East London districts Bow and Limehouse growing up, and had been in earlier jungle and garage crews together. Founding member Flowdan came up with their name, inspired by the phrase’s use in dancehall songs. He claims in Wiley’s 2017 book Eskiboy that he was in charge of most of the crew’s marketing, and Wiley was the ‘musical genius’ of the group.
The crew released a number of mixtapes before being signed to a major label and releasing their debut album, In at the Deep End, in June 2005. Interweaving hip-hop with grime, as their earlier Creeper mixtape series had done, the album placed at a respectable #50 in the UK, with top 40 singles “The Avenue” and “Shake a Leg” leading to appearances on Top of the Pops and CBeebies. Its other singles “When I’m ‘Ere” and “Heat Up” were ultimately hailed as grime classics.
Their second album Rules and Regulations was released in 2007, followed by the release of Return Of The Big Money Sound in 2008.
Jumping on the bandwagon of grime MCs making electronic dance music in the late 2000s and early 2010s, which had seen co-founder Wiley and alumni Dizzee Rascal, Tinchy Stryder and Skepta all further their commercial success, Roll Deep slimmed down their lineup for two pop-rap albums, while appeasing their core audience with free grime singles and the mixtape Say No More (2010). Their first pop album Winner Stays On (2010) was a moderate success which produced two UK #1 singles “Good Times” and “Green Light” and the album itself had underwhelming sales, while the follow-up X (2012) was a commercial flop, and was followed swiftly by the announcement of an indefinite hiatus for the group in 2013.
After making a small number of live appearances between 2018 and 2025, the crew returned their focus to grime and officially returned in 2026 with the single “B.U.N” and the announcement of a new mixtape, Best in the Game, due in June via fabric’s label FABRICLIVE. Its current members are Scratchy, Breeze, Manga Saint Hilare, Riko Dan, Roachee and DJ Karnage, with DJ Target, Wiley and Flowdan still affiliated with the crew but not an active part of the mixtape campaign.
