Redgum

Redgum were an Australian political folk group formed in Adelaide, 1975. The group consisted of John Schumann and Michael Atkinson on guitars and vocals, both having written most of the songs, as well as Verity Truman on flute and vocals, and were later joined by Hugh McDonald on fiddle and Chris Timms on violin.

The trio, Schumann, Atkinson, and Truman, met at Flinders University, having collaborated on a musical political art piece. The group quickly gained momentum, being in-demand for rallies, parties and pub gigs. Their first album, If You Don’t Fight You Lose was released in 1978, and they continued being active in studio until 1986, when they (sans Schumann) released their last album: Midnight Sun.

Redgum was an essential, yet too-often forgotten figure in the Australian political scene of the 1980s, and songs like ‘I Was Only 19’ still shake the country every ANZAC day.
