Known by many names in her career, Poldowski (1879-1932) was born Régine Wieniawski in Belgium, the daughter of the Polish violinist Henryk Wienawski. While her early musical career is difficult to document, she showed musical talent from a young age. After her father’s death, she and her English mother moved to Great Britain, where she started publishing compositions as a teenager. She married Sir Aubrey Dean Paul and took on a British aristocratic title, but she adopted the pseudonym Poldowski after the death of her firstborn son in 1904. Much of her vocal music is in French, though she also wrote orchestral and instrumental works.
