One of the earliest Australian musicians to gain fame in Europe, Percy Aldridge Grainger (1882-1961) was a virtuoso pianist who left Australia for Germany at age 13 to study. His good looks and charm helped him launch a career in the U.K. in early adulthood. In addition to his career as a pianist, he also was a prime mover in the push to revive British folk music in the early 20th century and made attempts to invent alternative scales, rhythms, and harmonic systems for Western music. A colorful personality, he was renowned as an endurance walker and bequeathed to his personal museum extensive details about his sadomasochistic sexual appetites.
