Oliver Tree

AKA: Oliver Tree Nickell

Oliver Tree Nickell (June 29, 1993 – June 14, 2026) was a vocalist, producer, and prolific scooter rider hailing from Santa Cruz, California. On March 27, 2016, Oliver released a video on Vine, entitled “I’m Turbo,” which was the first appearance of his persona, Turbo.

He released music under the name Tree before “When I’m Down”, his upbeat dance song with collaborator Whethan went viral, leading him to sign with Atlantic Records in 2017.

The genre-defying Alien Boy EP, the world’s first glimpse at Oliver’s potential, followed the next year and earned tens of millions of streams. Known for his big-budget music videos and the comedic clips posted on his social media, Oliver joined The Chainsmokers on select dates of their tour and played many festivals while attracting attention to his unique and unorthodox fashion sense.

The Huffington Post described Oliver as:

An enigma of genre. While (Oliver is) primarily a pianist, guitarist, and producer, his real-instruments-based production incorporates rap, male and female vocal harmonies, poetic lyrics, strings and a hearty dose of synth…

Oliver’s debut album, Ugly is Beautiful, was released July 17, to astonishing fanfare, reaching the top 3 on the iTunes charts within 24 hours of its release. Oliver followed up the release of Ugly is Beautiful almost a year later with a deluxe edition of the album, which was released on May 28, 2021.

In 2021, Oliver would later release a collaborative EP titled Welcome To The Internet with the Russian Rave band Little Big. He would also release four remixes of his song “Life Goes On”, which had previously been featured on the deluxe version of his debut album. The more notable remixes being with the rapper Ty Dolla $ign and another remix with Ski Mask The Slump God and Trippie Redd.

In early 2022, Oliver released the song “Cowboys Don’t Cry” and announced his sophomore album Cowboy Tears, released on February 18, 2022. In August 2022, Oliver Tree would release the single “Miss You,” to which the song would instantly go viral through social media, though it gained controversy with a similar remix done by southstar, where fans accused Oliver of stealing the song and not crediting southstar. Oliver has since stated in an interview with Anthony Padilla that he had no idea of the remix’s existence. On December 23, 2022, Oliver would release the deluxe version to Cowboy Tears titled Cowboy Tears Drown the World in a Swimming Pool of Sorrow.

On September 29, 2023, Oliver would release his third studio album, Alone In A Crowd, as well as his last with Atlantic Records. Oliver would then keep quiet with his releases, doing shows all over the world and uploading videos through social media. Following a dispute with Atlantic Records, almost cancelling his next release, as well as closing an almost three-year gap, on April 24, 2026, Oliver Tree would release his fourth studio album, Love You Madly Hate You Badly.

Oliver passed away at 32 years old on June 14, 2026, following two helicopters colliding midair and crashing at a parking lot of an abandoned church at Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after leaving his Love You Madly Hate You Badly show in São Paulo. The crash also killed 5 others, including Argentine YouTuber Gaspi.
