Nintendo (任天堂) is an entertainment company founded in Kyoto, Japan in 1889. Initially specializing in manufacturing playing cards, the company diversified into a number of other areas over the years before becoming a household name worldwide during the late 20th century via a long-running line of video game consoles and accompanying in-house software. The latter includes a number of highly successful franchises, including both fully first-party names like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Splatoon, and Animal Crossing and IPs developed by second-party subsidiaries such as Pokémon and Kirby.
