Newham Generals are a British grime duo consisting of Footsie and D Double E, and were originally a trio of MCs including Monkstar (known at the time as Monkey). They split off from N.A.S.T.Y. Crew at the end of 2003 after Double had allegedly been taking bookings in the name of the crew without the permission of its founding members. Footsie and Monkstar both also produce beats, as does the crew’s DJ, Tubby.

The group, whose name is a pun based on Newham General Hospital in East London, are known for their experimental sound and are credited among the earliest dubstep MCs. They were involved in the genre at its inception, when key club nights like FWD>> and Plastic People were people’s gateway to the genre, and have since carried the torch into other genres like bassline.

Key songs in their discography include the early songs “Frontline”, “War Wid” and “Prangman”, recorded circa 2003, which were later re-released on a special retrospective EP in 2020. Footsie also repped the crew on a classic Lord of the Mics battle against Roll Deep member Scratchy in 2004. Since then, they had a crossover hit with the 2009 Breakage collaboration “Hard”, featuring voiceover from radio legend David Rodigan, and released a debut album, Generally Speaking, via Dizzee Rascal’s label Dirtee Stank the same year. Subsequent appearances have included work with My Nu Leng, Giggs and Idris Elba.
