Modulators (or The Modulators) were a new wave/Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) band from Kiel, Germany. They are best known for being the precursor to the band FEX, who made the lostwave song “Subways of Your Mind”. The band’s goal was to blend German-language lyrics with a mix of new wave, punk, and electronic elements, firmly grounded in the spirit of NDW, yet distinctly outside the mainstream.

The band was formed in the fall of 1980, and consisted of Ture Rückwardt (vocals, guitar), Karl-Heinz Eckert (keyboard), Norbert Ziermann (bass) and Manfred Fox (drums).
The band played original songs written by Ture/Ture and Kalle, as well as cover songs. However, this would change in fall of the following year, when the band’s lineup changed and their artistic direction moved towards NDW-orientated music.

In fall of 1983, the band once again changed its lineup and artistic direction into a clearer, more focused sound, emphasizing groove, electronic elements, and vocal harmonies. This became the founding basis for FEX.
