MIKE
AKA: Michael J. Bonema, Michael Jordan Bonema
Michael Jordan Bonema (born October 13, 1998), known professionally as MIKE, is a rapper and songwriter from the Bronx, New York. He releases music under his label, 10k, and was part of the underground hip-hop collective, [sLUms]. Although MIKE lives in New York, he grew up in New Jersey, London, and Philadelphia.
At around the age of 10, MIKE decided he wanted to become a rapper. Although he grew up listening to R&B, his time in London exposed him to artists like MF DOOM, which influenced his early career, as evident in albums like Belgium Butter, where his flow and rhyme scheme reflect that inspiration, even referencing DOOM. At 14, MIKE began recording tracks and taught himself by listening to other music. Throughout high school, he continued refining his sound. He later attended college for one year before leaving to pursue music more seriously.
MIKE is both a rapper and producer, often creating his own work under the moniker dj blackpower. His lyrics are introspective and stream-of-consciousness, dealing with topics like grief, identity, and vulnerabilities. Sonically, his work features drumless samples, minimalistic instrumentation, ambient textures, and nostalgic, warped sounds. His flow complements the slow, drumless instrumentals, making each song distinctive.
MIKE has been prolific: multiple mixtapes, EPs, and independent releases. Though at his first release, MAY GOD BLESS YOUR HUSTLE, he was already getting praised. Pitchfork rated the album an 8.3, saying “best new music”. Even Earl Sweatshirt, a big inspiration for MIKE, ended up buying the album, creating a new friendship. Eventually, Earl and MIKE started collaborating.
