“We just tried to write music that we wanted to hear and didn’t think there were all that many bands these days doing sludge that wasn’t 10 minute long self-indulgent wanky boring shit. Trying to write nasty shit as heavy as possible. So we’re not surprised that other people may be into it.”

Those are the words of Sam Thurston in a Subcide Webzine interview. Thurston was Meth Drinker’s guitarist and the only member to not contribute vocals to the project.

Forming in 2010, New Zealand’s Meth Drinker were a late arrival to the scene but planted themselves as a namesake of the genre. The trio never performed with any extra musicians or had any members interchanged for one another. After Meth Drinker’s split-up in 2016, members Tony Pearson (drums, vocals) and James Quick (bass, vocals) went on to pursue a new project, Exterminator!, which began in 2021, whereas Sam Thurston went on to form Piggery in 2017. The band never disclosed why they split up.
