Following a career playing bass for Van Halen and Tremonti, Wolfgang Van Halen started his solo project in 2015, making the decision to record all parts of his songs by himself, citing inspiration from Dave Grohl and the first Foo Fighters album. The project’s debut was delayed due to Wolfgang’s father Eddies' declining health. In 2020, around 2 months following Eddie losing his battle with cancer, Mammoth, then known as Mammoth WVH, released its debut single, ‘Distance’ in his honor. Inspiration for the band name came from the original band name for Van Halen, Mammoth, along with Wolfgang’s initials.

Caught between a mix of fans arguing whether he or not he should imitate the style of Van Halen, Wolfgang answered by saying he wanted to make his music distinct from his fathers: “I’ll always be there to champion my father and his legacy…I definitely made a choice to not sound directly like Van Halen…I think that would be boring if I was a carbon copy of my dad.”

Mammoth WVH’s eponymous debut album was released in 2021, though songwriting and recording went as far back as 2013. The first single, ‘Distance’, hit #1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, as did his second single, ‘Don’t Back Down’. The third single, ‘Epiphany’, was a top 10 hit. In 2022, a digital deluxe edition of the Mammoth WVH album was announced, which added 3 additional songs.

The band’s second album, Mammoth II, had a much faster recording process, now that Wolfgang had established his sound. He decided to take the project in a heavier direction, citing inspirations such as Meshuggah. Mammoth II released on August 4, 2023, and spawned the singles ‘Another Celebration at the End of the World’, ‘Like a Pasttime’, ‘Take a Bow’ and ‘I’m Alright’.

In April 2025, the band silently removed the ‘WVH’ from its name after naming rights were obtained for “Mammoth”. A single titled “The End” was released on May 1, with an album of the same name releasing in October.

The bands' touring lineup consists of Frank Sidoris on Guitar, Jon Jourdan on Guitar, Ronnie Ficarro on Bass, and Garrett Whitlock on Drums.
