Maki
AKA: Ralph William Datoon, Ralph William Galang
Ralph William Datoon (born November 27, 1999), known as Maki, is a Filipino singer and songwriter. He graduated from New Era University in the Philippines with a Bachelor of Science in Communications. Maki began writing songs during his high school years and auditioned for several record labels. He once shared that he experienced trauma during a particularly difficult audition at the age of 15, where he was treated unkindly and may have encountered inappropriate behavior. Maki cites Mariah Carey, The 1975, Michael Bublé, beabadoobee, Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift as musical influences.
Maki auditioned for Season 1 of The Voice Teens Philippines. After stepping away from music to focus on graduating college, he planned to leave his musical aspirations behind until a friend discovered one of his demo recordings. That demo caught the attention of representatives of Tarsier Records, including Jonathan Manalo and Rox Santos, ultimately leading to his signing to the record label.
He adopted the stage name Maki, a name he personally chose. Neither he nor his label has provided an in-depth explanation for the name, it has since become his moniker.
In 2021, Maki released his debut single “Halaga”, which he promoted through live gigs and busking. His 2023 single “Saan?” gained traction on TikTok, followed by the release of his debut extended play Tanong, which featured five tracks.
In 2024, he released “Dilaw”, which became the biggest hit of his career and made him the most streamed OPM male artist on Spotify at the time. The music video featured Maloi Ricalde, member of the Filipino girl group BINI, portraying high school students connecting through a shared love for art and adventure. He also released “Namumula” on August 30, and “Bughaw” on December 1.
On June 13, 2025, Maki returned with his single “kahel na langit”. The song conveys a deep sense of longing and reminiscing for someone who once brought warmth and comfort during difficult times.
