Magic Dirt are an alternative rock band formed in Geelong, Australia by vocalist/guitarist Adalita Srsen, bassist/backing vocalist Dean Turner and drummer Adam Robertson in 1991. Founding guitarist Daniel Herring left the group and was replaced by Dave Thomas for the recording of their debut album Friends in Danger, and Thomas himself left and was replaced by current lead guitarist Raul Sanchez in 1997.
Through the 90s, the band’s music centred on heavy riffs that frequently gave way to droning feedback and noise, while also backing some darkly catchy melodies. This earned them a strong underground following and support slots for the likes of Pavement, Sonic Youth and Hole during various Australian tours.
In the 21st century, the band continued with fuzzy guitars but polished their overall sound and started incorporating more direct pop hooks – this saw them gain some crossover success with the albums What Are Rock Stars Doing Today (2000), Tough Love (2003), and the singles ‘Dirty Jeans’ and ‘Plastic Loveless Letter’ (an Australian top 40 hit).

A few months after Turner’s shock passing from a rare form of soft tissue cancer in 2009, Magic Dirt released the White Boy EP before going on a hiatus. As of September 2023 White Boy is still their last new release, but the band have been regularly performing again with touring bassist Steve Patrick since 2018, and re-released their 90s albums and EPs due to original record label Au Go Go becoming either defunct or inactive.
Dave Thomas also passed away following a battle with cancer in 2020.
