Machine Girl is a digital hardcore trio, fusing elements of punk, hardcore, industrial, breaks, and electronic music. The trio is comprised of vocalist and producer Matthew Stephenson, drummer Sean Kelly who releases his own music under the alias MANKiD, and joining after initially contributing to their live performances, guitarist Lucy Caputi. Stephenson often performs in drag and adorned with their black metal-inspired corpse paint.

A heavy cyberpunk influence characterizes their music. Other influences include anime, Y2K aesthetics, and contemporary internet culture. The band name was inspired by the Japanese film of the same name, with samples from its English dub and other references populating much of their early output. Similar inspiration and sampling was also drawn from the cult-classic Ginger Snaps trilogy; the films' juxtaposition between the female coming-of-age story and the horror element of werewolves is an apt example of the realm in which Machine Girl operate and express themselves. Werewolves and dogs are a further recurring lyrical and aesthetic theme, being used to evoke aggression and a suppressed animalistic nature.

Their debut album, WLFGRL, gained attention from media sources and garnered them a small following, eventually leading to their next record GEMINI. They eventually released their 3rd album, BECAUSE I’M YOUNG ARROGANT AND HATE EVERYTHING YOU STAND FOR, which saw them going in a more digital hardcore direction, and subsequently their future sound contains elements of more experimental fusions of rock and electronics.
