m-flo
Formed in 1998, m-flo is a legendary Japanese musical group that revolutionized the country’s music scene. The pioneering trio consists of rapper/MC VERBAL, producer/DJ ☆Taku Takahashi, and vocalist LISA. They radically transformed contemporary R&B and pop rap by fusing eclectic club beats with bilingual lyrics. Initially established in 1998 by high school classmates VERBAL and ☆Taku Takahashi. Shortly after, vocalist LISA joined the group, completing the original “Tripod” lineup. They officially made their major debut in July 1999 with “the tripod e.p.”. LISA eventually departed in 2002 to pursue a solo career. This prompted an era known as “m-flo loves,” where VERBAL and ☆Taku collaborated with a rotating roster of 41 guest vocalists—including heavyweights like BoA, Namie Amuro, and Crystal Kay. In December 2017, LISA officially rejoined the group, reuniting the original trio to celebrate their lasting legacy. Before m-flo, the Japanese music industry was highly segmented, with strict boundaries defining rock, R&B, and hip-hop. m-flo defied these rules by seamlessly blending J-Pop, R&B, pop rap, and electronic dance music into an innovative, mainstream-friendly sound
