Heavily drenched in street raps and charismatic melodies, Lil Berete’s songs not only depict Canadian culture but also accentuate his Afro-Caribbean background. Born Yaya Berete (April 3, 2001), the Regent Park rapper burst onto the scene with tracks like “Real,” “Northside,” “Southside” and “Go N Get It”. He released his debut mixtape Icebreaker in September of 2018 and is currently signed to New Gen, a subsidiary of XL Recordings. He also belongs to the self-inspired collective “Southside to Northside”.
Though his mother, Cheka Katenen Dioubate, was a singer back in her native country of Guinea, Lil Berete is influenced by artists such as T-Pain, Akon, and Young Thug.
