Koolism are an Australian hip-hop duo from Canberra, ACT, comprised of Hau (Hau Latukefu) and DJ Danielsan (Dan Elleson).

Koolism started out in 1992 when Danielsan joined hip-hop group Tribe Ledda L (the L standing for Latukefu), which comprised of Hau and his cousins Hounga and Sione. In 1995, his cousins left the group, and the duo changed their name to Koolism. They released their debut mixtape, Bedroom Shit, a year after, and were soon signed to Parallax View Recordings, which they released their first handful of EPs under: Lift Ya Game in 1996, Blue Notes in 2000 and The Season in 2002. That same year, they put those last two EPs together into a full-length album, titled Pt. 1.

Koolism moved over to Invada Records, where they intended to follow up with Pt. 2 which would’ve been comprised of two EPs; Butcher Shop and The Epic, but they ultimately never saw the light of day due to their equipment being stolen out of their car while they were on tour, and one of their hard drives breaking and failing to backup properly. As revealed by DJ Danielsan in the description for Pt. 1 on Koolism’s Bandcamp page, they also intended for Blue Notes and The Season and the two other scrapped EPs to make up one big collage with the Koolism logo (drawn by their friend Seth One) in the middle when put together. Despite these setbacks, Koolism carried on and skipped Pt. 2 to work on Pt. 3 – Random Thoughts, which would go on to win the first ever ARIA for “Best Urban Release” in 2004.

Koolism quickly assembled together their next studio album, New Old Ground, in 2006, which was produced within a month. In December of that year, Koolism begun work on The ‘Umu, which they would work on for the next four years, finally serving it to the world in 2010.
