jackzebra
AKA: jackapplepeople
Zhang ZhengKai (born 2002), professionally known as jackzebra and under many other monikers, such as jackapplepeople, zeb, and 孙龙潭, is a Chinese recording artist from Shanghai and based in Chengdu, Sichuan.
jackzebra began his music career in mid-2020 with his debut tape, 626, released under 626company—a collective created by him and fellow members 1kbps and ricky_118. In the years following, he would release a slew of singles and mixtapes on his Bandcamp and SoundCloud, frequently collaborating with fellow Chinese artists such as Miriamdola, Billionhappy, User116, and even Shanghai sensation Bloodz Boi.
Despite making all of his music in Chinese, jack raps over instrumentals to American-based underground scenes such as cloud rap, plugg, pluggnb, and trap, rapping over beats from SURF GANG and Xangang. Alongside this, he collaborates with rappers in these circles as well, enlisting Shed Theory’s woody on his debut album, having numerous songs with Tek lintowe, and featuring Acid Souljah, Yung Frendi, and Harto Falión on his tape 王中王.
jack manages all this while maintaining lyrics centered around life situations, general thoughts, and the harsh social struggles he and numerous others face in his hometown in China, encompassing heavy Auto-Tune and reverb with his mumbly vocals.
He began gaining notoriety in November 2024 when a post dubbing him “Chinese Bladee” due to his song “你怎么知道” exploded in virality on X, gaining over 75,000 likes. Following this, the song reached over one hundred thousand streams, causing him to surpass 30,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. In the weeks following, the widespread music magazine Pitchfork posted an article detailing his evolution as an artist and reviewing his tape, 王中王.
