Head (Punk)

Head is a (Punk) rock band, formed in Seattle, WA in 1990 by Ree Ree (vocals, bass), Touch (guitar), and Tulu (drums), with The Giggles (guitar, vocals) joining shortly thereafter. Entering the scene at a time when pop-punk had only begun to take hold, Head fused an uncompromising Ramones musical attack with an Angry Samoans-style lyrical attitude. They essentially sprung to life as the ideal “Ramones-core” band years before the term was even widely understood.

During Head’s initial run, the band self-released two LPs, Street Level Assault (1994) and The Monkeys (1997), via their own Evil Clown Records. The limited national availability of Head’s records and the relative scarcity of their live performances meant that far fewer 90s punk fans had a chance to hear Head than they did the many other similarly-minded punk bands of the era. However, a number of those bands were themselves Head fans —Head was the Ramones band’s Ramones band. Later acts like the Riverdales and the Lillingtons would benefit from the blueprint that Head provided.

Head’s first era ended in the late 90s when The Giggles left the band to form the Sabbath-inspired doom metal outfit Golden Pig Electric Blues Band. The remaining members of Head carried on as a three-piece and eventually self-released another album, No Hugging No Learning, in 2006. A year later, they released Heil Head!, which collected the band’s entire discography from 1992 to 1997.

Though mostly inactive now, Head occasionally reunites to play a show or record a single. They still haven’t told anyone their real names.
