Hanumankind
AKA: Sooraj Cherukat
Originally from Malappuram, Kerala, Hanumankind is an Indian rapper, singer and songwriter who moved to Houston, Texas as a child. He returned to Bengaluru in 2015 and has been making music independently since, as a colourful figure in the underground Desi Hip-Hop scene.
Since 2016, he’s been popping up at shows across Bangalore, as well as NH7 Weekenders. He won the 2017 Mic Drop Tournament which recognised up and coming rappers. 2019 marked the beginning of his touring around the country, and setting up for the release of the Kalari EP, which debuted on 27th December, 2019. It was followed with a second EP, Surface Level, but his breakout into the mainstream came with the song “Big Dawgs”, which garnered critical acclaim due to its catchy lyrics and creative music video, reflecting his roots and culture in Kerala.
Musically, he brings out a fiery flow that immediately stands out, with him growing up around musical influences like SPM Houston, Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole and Logic in the US. While his grassroots may be from South India, he’s growing towards being a citizen of the world with a wide sonic palette.
