Gravediggaz

Gravediggaz was an American hip hop group from New York City, well known for their dark sense of humor and abrasive, menacing soundscapes. The group is widely credited as being one of the most influential and pioneering groups in the small hip-hop subgenre of horrorcore. Their lineup consisted of:

Following a multi-album run as the sole producer of De La Soul and the dissolution of his group Stetsasonic, DJ/producer Prince Paul formed Gravediggaz in 1991, recruiting fellow Stetsasonic alumni Frukwan as well as Poetic and Prince Rakeem (RZA); all four of them had previously been signed to Tommy Boy Records. The group adopted monikers relating to death, and immediately began compiling a demo tape to shop to labels. After years of multiple unsuccessful attempts to secure a record deal, the Gravediggaz began to lose hope, until Gee Records reached out and agreed to sign them. In 1994, the Gravediggaz released their debut album, 6 Feet Deep, credited as one of the earliest horrorcore albums.

Gravediggaz followed up 6 Feet Deep with The Pick, the Sickle and the Shovel in ‘97, but both Prince Paul and RZA left the group shortly after. With Frukwan and Poetic as the remaining Gravediggaz, they immediately began working on their next album. However, Poetic died of colon cancer in 2001, marking the end of the Gravediggaz tenure. Frukwan and Poetic’s Gravediggaz album, Nightmare in A-Minor, was released in 2002.

According to Frukwan, the group’s name means “digging graves of the mentally dead, and it stood for resurrecting the mentally dead from their state of unawareness and ignorance.” They focused primarily on issues presented as macabre black humor (such as suicide, death, killing, psychopathy, hell, etc..), as a way of presenting social criticism towards the music industry.
