Goodbye To Gravity was a Romanian Metalcore band from Bucharest. It was active from 2011 until 2015. The band’s lifespan was cut short by the Colectiv nightclub fire, a disaster that killed 4 out of the 5 members. During the concert, meant to celebrate the release of their sophomore album, Mantras of War, the band’s pyrotechnics ignited the club’s flammable polyurethane acoustic foam, which resulted in the aforementioned disaster. ) The nightclub wasn’t built for such events (it was set up in a former shoe factory) and was proven to be legalized through bribing. The club’s confined entrance hindered the crowd’s escape stampede, which resulted in 64 total deaths (out of which 4 are the dead band members) and 146 non-fatal injuries. As a result, the 3 patrons of the Colectiv nightclub were sentenced to 11 years and 8 months in prison. The disaster ignited a series of anti-corruption protests which resulted in the resignation of several Romanian politicians. Goodbye To Gravity’s calling card song, The Day We Die, is a song about political corruption and became a temporary anthem for the protesters.
