A larger-than-life personality who became the face of UK drum & bass as it came to prominence in the mid-90s, Clifford Price (b. 1965) hailed from the UK’s Black Country and spent his formative years as a breakdancer and graffiti artist before a brief sojourn to the US. On his return to the UK, he became enamoured with the rave scene via his then-girlfriend Kemistry, and worked for Reinforced Records before releasing his first tracks as Rufige Kru. “Terminator” (1992) under the moniker Metalheads was innovative for its use of pitch-shifting, and allowed rave music to move away from its helium-voiced vocal samples. Setting up the similarly-named record label Metalheadz in 1994, its releases by big names on the scene such as Alex Reece, Dillinja, Doc Scott, Peshay and Photek raised it in high esteem within the drum & bass genre, and his debut long-player Timeless (1995) exalted him to the mainstream, largely thanks to the epic 21-minute “Inner City Life”. Club nights showcasing his music and labelmates followed, and Goldie gradually garnered an air of fame, dating singer Bjork, appearing in a James Bond film, and securing a brief role in the BBC’s long-running soap opera Eastenders as gangster Angel Hudson (a nod to the song “Angel” on his Timeless album). Numerous appearances on UK reality shows have kept him in the national conscience, and his Metalheadz label celebrated an unprecedented 30-year anniversary in 2024.
