Forgotten Tomb are an Italian black doom metal group, formed in Piacenza in 1999 at the behest of the leader Ferdinando “Herr Morbid” Marchisio.

Considered one of the leading bands of black metal, the band is known to be among the pioneers of depressive/suicidal black metal, from which the band will later depart partially, including other influences (mainly from the Dark Wave of the eighties but also from Rock).

The band consists of vocalist/guitarist Ferdinando “Herr Morbid” Marchisio, bassist Alessandro “Algol” Comerio, and dummer Gianmarco “Asher” Rossi. Past members included Torment, Tiziano “Razor SK” Scassa, Henrik “Nordvargr” Björkk, and Andrea “A.” Ponzoni.

Their first EP, Obscura Arcana Mortis, was recorded by Herr Morbid as a solo undertaking in 1999 and released the following year. The band’s first full-length album, Song to Leave, was released in 2002. It followed the albums Springtime Depression, being the final Forgotten Tomb project to only include the band leader on all instruments, and Love’s Burial Ground in 2004, which was their first to feature a complete lineup in its recording. The lyrics of the first albums deal mainly with depression and suicide, while later they focus on negativity and nihilism in general.

In 2006, Forgotten Tomb signed with Avantgarde Music and recorded its fourth full-length, Negative Megalomania, in addition to covering the song “Nowhere” for the Katatonia tribute album.

Following their album Under Saturn Retrograde, their trilogy of records took place with …And Don’t Deliver Us From Evil, Hurt Yourself And The Ones You Love, and We Owe You Nothing. Their 2020 effort was titled Nihilistic Estrangement.

After 25 years as a band and ten albums preceding their latest record Nightfloating in 2024, they continue to earn great reviews for their efforts in the genre.
