Foliage
AKA: Manuel Walker, Manuel J. Walker, Manuel Joseph Walker
Manuel Joseph Walker, known professionally as Foliage, is a California based indie artist. Since 2014, Walker has been creating music in his bedroom in Rialto, California. Walker is well-known for being a one-man band: writing, producing, and engineering his music.
Walker began his music career at the age of sixteen with almost no experience at all at producing music. He plugged in his guitar to his computer. The result—his first single: “The Things I Do For Love.” Soon after, Walker released his first album, Truths. Walker has since released quite a few singles including “The Other Day” and “Pattern”, both of which were massive hits among fans. In 2018, Walker released a new album, III which he calls his best album.
Walker has stated in an interview that The Smiths have had the most significant influence on his music. He says:
Once I heard The Smiths, I was hooked forever. I got goosebumps all over me, hearing the music full blast in my ears. I wanted it to be louder!
He says that his sister introduced him to The Smiths as well as The Cure, both of which have had a massive impact on his music. Also, Walker’s songs are inspired by guitar melodies that Johnny Marr played.
