Flying Squid Is a solo project created by John Stephen, it initially started off as an Instrumental Electronic project, with the release of stuff like Starship Dandelion (2019), Bigfoot Goes To School: An Audiobiography (2020), Boing! (2020), and the Broken EP (2020). However, 4 months after the Broken EP, Flying Squid leaned more into Indie Pop similar to Jack Stauber, with albums/EP’s like, Good hunting (2020), Reaper (2020), Snow (2020), and Nevermind (2021).

With the release of the King Of The Monsters EP, his sound started to lean a little bit towards Noise Pop, eventually with coming out with the album When I get back home, being his most personal album, including genres like Noise Pop and Noise Rock, as he’d continue this genre style similar to Car Seat Headrest with the releases of Untitled, Soft forever, The world is out to get you, and you’re letting it get to you, etc., eventually leaning out of the Noise Pop style and more into a traditional Indie Rock style, with releases like his double album All the Fire Starters, All Falling Apart (2023), and his later EP, without spines (2023). He would remain the same throughout all of his later albums
such as APOLOGETICA (2025) and Ghouls (2025) until his latest release in 2026 ostensibly pop music EP that he leans back more into Noise Pop.

In 2025, Flying Squid collabed with Bea Jumpup to create soundtracks for the independent film The Ghosts of Winter Cape.

In 2026, Flying Squid released “FROZEN COWARDS” calling out ICE in the United States to support immigrants via an organization fundraiser.
