Dominick Argento (1927-2019) was the son of Sicilian immigrants who served as a cryptographer for the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he started studying music at the Peabody Conservatory. His music is almost entirely for voice, including 14 operas and numerous choral works and song cycles. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1975 for his From the Diary of Virginia Woolf.
