David Knopfler is a British singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer, best known as a founding member of the iconic rock band Dire Straits. Born on December 27, 1952, in Glasgow, Scotland, he grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne, where his early passion for music led him to master guitar, piano, and drums by age 11. By 14, he was already performing original songs in local folk clubs.
In 1977, David co-founded Dire Straits with his older brother Mark Knopfler, bassist John Illsley, and drummer Pick Withers. He played rhythm guitar on the band’s first two albums, Dire Straits (1978) and Communiqué (1979), before departing during the recording of their third album due to creative tensions.
Since then, David has carved out a respected solo career, releasing over a dozen albums that showcase his introspective songwriting and melodic sensibility. His music blends rock, folk, and poetic lyricism, often exploring personal and universal themes. Beyond music, he’s also published poetry and written a satirical guidebook, all while maintaining a fiercely independent artistic path.
He lives in Devon, England, with his wife, art professor Leslie Stroz, who also illustrates his album covers. David continues to write, record, and perform, staying true to his belief in substance over spectacle.
