Danzig is a metal band originating from New Jersey in 1987, founded by vocalist and songwriter Glenn Danzig as a continuation of his band Samhain. The original lineup consisted of Glenn Danzig, Chuck Biscuits on drums, Eerie Von on bass, and John Christ on guitar. There have been several members to come and go over the past thirty years. Johnny Kelly and Steve Zing of gothic rock band Type O Negative and Tommy Victor of Prong are the current members other than Glenn Danzig himself.

Danzig is most commonly known for their smash hit “Mother” released in 1988 on the band’s self-titled album, though the track didn’t get mainstream appeal until the song was given a video in 1993. Each of the the three ‘Hangover’ movie soundtracks feature one Danzig song, also garnering some attention for the band. As of 2021, Danzig has released 12 studio albums. Each album from ‘Danzig II: Lucifuge’ to ‘Danzig 777: I Luciferi’ somehow incorporate the number of the album into the title.

The first three Danzig albums have bluesy-metal sounds, and are seen as the highlight of Danzig’s music. ‘Danzig 4’ is the final album with the band’s original lineup. Biscuits left shortly after the album’s release due to a contract dispute, and Von and Christ left because they didn’t like what

Glenn was planning for the band. ‘Danzig 5: Blackacidevil,’ as well as the two albums following it, have dark, industrial metal sounds. It is obvious that Glenn’s voice had begun weakening due to years of constant touring. ‘Circle of Snakes’ is heavy doom metal, featuring the song “Skincarver” that is frequently played at Danzig concerts.

‘The Lost Tracks of Danzig’ came in 2007, a compilation of 26 tracks cut from previous albums. ‘Deth Red Sabaoth’ (a play on words referring to the likes of Megadeth and Black Sabbath) was released in 2010, with more typical heavy metal sounds. Glenn’s voice was surprisingly strong in this album. The 60’s.70’s and 80’s cover album ‘Skeletons’ was released five years later. A metal-influenced rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Let Yourself Go” hinted at the potential of an Elvis cover album that had been rumored for years. 2017 saw the release of ‘Black Laden Crown,’ which received a bit of backlash due to Glenn’s weak vocals on a few of the tracks. Glenn actually played drums, guitar, and bass on some of the songs. In April 2020, the long-awaited ‘Danzig Sings Elvis’ finally released to a rather mediocre reception from critics.
