D’ALA (US)
D’ALA are alchemists. Born on opposite ends of the globe, everything about the duo’s encounter feels like it was written in the stars. With roots spanning from Cuba to Iraq by way of France and the USA, D’ALA’s music transcends borders. An elixir of Bonham-esque drums, electric guitars and stuttering synths blended with their two expressive voices, D’ALA’s cinematic sound feels familiar and new at the same time.
While Los Angeles-based D’ALA wrote and performed their first single Addicted, released June 1st on Babocado Entertainment, the record was produced, mixed and mastered by the masculine half of the duo, Boogie Monsta. It was on his birthday in 2009 that he met his feminine counterpart Mauikai, during a serendipitous rehearsal in the French countryside. Music quickly ensued as they wrote Lonely Nights, a first collaboration exploring their melancholic and solitary lifestyle; Hip Hop duo Backpack Jax was born. Their chemistry was such that within months, they released records and toured Europe with their band for 3 years. But in 2014, when both their autoimmune afflictions took a turn for the worst, Mauikai and Boogie became unable to perform for over 3 years, leaving them to question everything, shedding layers and digging deep down to their core. Unwilling to settle at rock-bottom, they had to reinvent themselves one day at a time, and build something new. Stronger now and undefined by their conditions, the pair is re-emerging as D’ALA, an unapologetic, yin-driven duo that is chasing what makes them feel the most alive, bending reality to fit their vision.
For these two 33-year-old creatives that means much more than music: from directing their own videos and conceiving all visuals and photo shoots, to producing other acts. Imprinted with the euphoric feeling of a finish line being crossed by two artists who have been through the fire, Addicted is a first glimpse into D’ALA’s universe, and it is one of refreshing honesty. Transforming the lead of their heartaches into gold, they are a light to anyone facing challenges of their own. D’ALA are ADDICTED to love, and it is obvious in every aspect of what they create.
