Cortex was a pioneering French jazz-funk band formed in 1974 by pianist and composer Alain Mion. Blending elements of jazz, funk, and psychedelic soul, Cortex became known for their lush arrangements, groovy basslines, and ethereal vocal harmonies.

Their 1975 debut album, Troupeau Bleu, is widely regarded as a classic of European jazz-funk. Though relatively obscure upon release, the album gained cult status over the decades, particularly among hip-hop producers. Tracks like “Huit Octobre 1971” and “Prelude à Go Round” have been sampled by artists such as MF DOOM, Madlib, and Rick Ross, cementing Cortex’s influence on modern music.

Despite lineup changes and a brief initial run, Alain Mion later revived the Cortex name for new recordings and performances. Today, the band’s work remains a touchstone for crate diggers, jazz enthusiasts, and beatmakers worldwide.
