Clairo
AKA: Claire Elizabeth Cottrill, Claire Cottrill, DJ Baby Benz
Claire Elizabeth Cottrill (born August 18, 1998), better known by her stage name Clairo, is an American singer-songwriter.
Born in Atlanta, GA and raised in Carlisle, MA, Claire’s parents are marketing executive Geoff Cottrill and photographer Allie E. Cottrill, who influenced her music taste. She told Beats 1:
My dad is the reason why I love Al Green so much, and my mom is the reason why I love Cocteau Twins so much.
Clairo’s debut EP, Do U Wanna Fall In Love?, was self-released in December 2014. She rose to prominence with tracks like “Pretty Girl,” and “Flaming Hot Cheetos, with them both gaining traction on social media. Her earlier music is known for its DIY aesthetics, with videos like “Pretty Girl” being filmed on a laptop webcam.
Clairo’s debut album, Immunity, was released in 2019. The tracks “Sofia” and “Bags” drew attention to her, with many going on to hail her as “the face” of bedroom pop.
In 2020 she formed the Shelly with her friends Claud, Josh Mehling, and Noa Getzug.
A year later, in 2021, she released her second album Sling, stepping away from these bedroom pop sensibilities and leaning more into indie folk and chamber pop.
In 2024, following a period of fewer formal releases (bar appearances on Lorde’s Solar Power to provide background vocals, collaborating with beabadoobee on the “Glue Song (Remix)” and releasing a live EP of tracks from previous records), Claire released her third album, Charm—again evolving her sound into sophisti-pop territory.
In 2025, Shelly released a double single, marking the band’s first release in five years.
