Carl Smith was one of most popular and prolific country music artists in the 1950s and 1960s. Born in 1927, in Maynardville, Tennessee, Smith began his music career in the 1940s, performing on local radio stations and eventually signing with Columbia Records. Known for his smooth voice and traditional country sound, Smith achieved significant success in the 1950s with hits like “I Overlooked an Orchid,” “If Teardrops Were Pennies,” and “Hey Joe!” He became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1950 and recorded over 350 songs, earning him a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2003. Smith passed away in 2010.
