Captain Beyond
A minor—and criminally forgotten—supergroup from 1972, CAPTAIN BEYOND was made up of vocalist Rod Evans (Deep Purple—his voice is the one you hear on “Hush”), bassist Lee Dorman (Iron Butterfly), drummer Bobby Caldwell (Johnny Winter Band) and guitarist Larry “Rhino” Reinhardt (post-“In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” Iron Butterfly).
Their eponymous debut was released in 1972, and is now considered a classic example of proto-heavy metal. It was unique among guitar-driven hard rock albums in that it contains a wide range of influences, including Latin and jazz, often with various time signatures and a broad range of dynamics within the same song.
Caldwell left after the album to join Rick Derringer’s band, and Captain Beyond added a new drummer, along with a keyboardist and percussionist. This six-man lineup released Sufficiently Breathless in 1973, with all the tracks credited to Dorman. Evans left thereafter, and the band broke up.
The band reformed a number of times in the many years since, and a current version fronted by Caldwell still tours, but it is still only the first album that anyone remembers.
