Cameron Smith is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Fort Worth, Texas, with a high-lonesome sound.
Raised by a race car driver and an elementary schoolteacher, Smith sings from life’s shadows but carries a hopeful heart, drawing upon hard lessons learned from the blacktop to the blackboard. Dropping out of seminary at 19, he hit the road with a punk band, finding not salvation but songs that could speak truth and offer solace.
Inspired by songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Blaze Foley, and John Prine, as well as indie icons like Will Oldham, Jason Molina, and David Berman, Smith’s music blends melancholy with resilience, exploring the space between shadow and light, fate and free will, longing and belonging.
After fronting the hardcore punk band Decades as a teenager, he emerged in 2011 at the helm of War Party, a scrappy five-piece with roots in post-punk and garage rock. He began performing solo under the rubric Sur Duda in 2013 until that project transitioned into a full band upon the release of their debut album Paper Knife in 2017. The project has been on hiatus since the release of 2021’s Total Distortion.
He has been releasing solo material as a folk singer-songwriter under his own name since 2019’s A Good Way to Say Goodbye.
