Butterfly Haus

Butterfly Haus (music formerly made under the moniker “SAZE”) is the Brooklyn-based indie-alternative music project of New Jersey-born Nigerian-American producer, songwriter and recording artist Osaze Akerejah. Though Akerejah has been making original music since the late 2000’s the initial idea for the Butterfly Haus project was first birthed in 2019, finally coming to fruition in 2022 after a period that saw Akerejah simultaneously battling heartbreak, a stage-4 cancer diagnosis and tumultuous mental and physical health struggles.

The act’s lyrics revolve around introspection, identity exploration, love, mental health, and life’s peaks and valleys. These themes are married to eclectic production rooted in indie rock, alternative pop, hip-hop elements, and fragments of 70’s/80’s new wave, creating a seamless and dynamic blend that traverses sonics of the past, present and future.

“These last few years have been beyond transformative. I’m not nearly the same man or artist I initially set out to try to be. Making music under the SAZE moniker was a lovely cocoon that I existed within since 7th grade, and I guess all the trauma, growth and self discovery of the past three-four years especially was what finally cracked the cocoon, ya know? And the butterfly could finally emerge, dig?”
- Akerejah

Butterfly Haus’s influences are wide-ranging with Akerejah describing it’s sonic and lyrical palette as a “semi-focused yet semi-out of control Velcro ball rolling around” primarily influenced by Kate Bush, Kanye West, Arcade Fire, Frank Ocean, Angel Olsen, Jay Z, Grizzly Bear, Phil Collins and Prince but ultimately filtered through a unique prism anchored by Akerejah’s vision.

In 2019 Akerejah officially launched his own music production, recording and songwriting firm Glass Bullet Sound Company, effectively signing to himself in a move reminiscent of Shawn “Jay Z” Carter in 1995. This entity allows Akerejah to own his own publishing and his own catalog masters as well as provide sonic services to other artists and creatives.
