Brit Smith is a singer, model and actress who was born in Wilton, Connecticut, on December 3, 1985. She made her acting debut, appearing in 90’s soap operas along her sister and continued to act and model throughout her childhood.

In 2002, the siblings formed a pop duo called Brit & Alex and had a minor hit with 2008’s “Let It Go,” which hit number 75 in the UK after it appeared on the Step Up 2: The Streets film soundtrack. When the group split in 2009, Brit launched a solo career under the stage name “Matisse,” making her official debut with the 2010 single “Better Than Her.” with Akon. “Better Than Her” hit Number 1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay chart. Matisse’s follow-up single, “Provocative” was a commercial failure and her debut album was permanently shelved by her record label. Brit had said in a video posted to TikTok in May 2024 that featured Chris Appleton:

Things just kept getting in the way label wise, it was starting to weigh on me and then the opportunity for Color Wow, as the opportunity for us to grow that kind of became more and more of an option, it felt like I was pushing a boulder up a hill to try and make this [music] career work.

She retired from the music business in 2013 joining Color Wow in 2015, a family owned business and hair care company. In April 2024, her unreleased 2012 song “Karma’s a Bitch” became an unexpected internet phenomenon upon the release of JoJo Siwa’s version after online users found a music video uploaded to Vimeo from eleven years before. The release of Brit Smith’s older version later on that month drew acclaim for it’s nostalgic throwback sound to late 2000’s dance-pop similarly to JoJo Siwa’s version with the only difference being Smith’s version praised for a more Timbaland-esque production compared to Siwa’s which received polarizing reviews for it’s over the top production.
