Bonnie Tyler

AKA: Gaynor Hopkins

Bonnie Tyler (born Gaynor Hopkins) was born on June 8, 1951 in Skewen, Wales. She was known for her husky vocal tone and soulful pop-rock repertoire.

“Lost In France,” became her first hit single, charting at #9 in the UK in 1976. It was followed shortly after by “It’s a Heartache,”, which became her first US chart hit.

After meeting American songwriter/producer Jim Steinman, Tyler released her GRAMMY-nominated single “Total Eclipse of The Heart,” in 1983. The single features on her Platinum-selling album Faster Than The Speed of Night, which also received a GRAMMY nomination in 1984. Later that year, she released “Holding Out for a Hero,” which features on the Footloose soundtrack.

In the 90s, Tyler had further success in Europe, with the multi-Platinum selling album Bitterblue,, and numerous chart hits including “Bitterblue,” “Fools Lullaby,” and “Making Love (Out of Nothing at All)”.

In 2003, Tyler released “Si demain… (Turn Around)” with French singer Kareen Antonn. Their bilingual duet reached #1 in Belgium and France.

Tyler represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 with “Believe in Me,” which featured on her critically-acclaimed album Rocks and Honey.

After reuniting with producer David Mackay, with whom she had recorded her early hits in the 1970s, Tyler released two subsequent albums, Between the Earth and the Stars and The Best Is Yet to Come. Her latest single “Yes I Can,” produced by Mackay and Patrick Schmiderer, was released in January 2025.

On July 8, 2026, Bonnie Tyler unfortunately passed away whilst visiting Portugal at the age of 75.
