Been Stellar
Been Stellar is an American indie rock band based in New York City.
The group was formed by Samuel Slocum (vocals) and Skyler Knapp (guitar), who met when they were 14 and hail from Michigan. After the pair moved to New York City to attend NYU in 2017, the group was completed by guitarist Nando Dale, drummer Laila Wayans, and bassist Nicolas Brunstein. The band’s current line-up comprises Slocum, Knapp, Brunstein, and drummer Gigi Giobbi.
They are named after the American actor Ben Stiller, who shouted them out on Twitter in 2025 and who they also met in 2019. The band name was coined by Knapp right after he met Slocum and they started to make music together.
We had started making music together, and we needed a name, and there was an electronic musician — I assume still is — named Com Truise. And we thought that was funny, like, the switch of the letters. And so then Sky just said, “What about Been Stellar? Like, ‘How’ve you been?’ ‘I’ve been stellar.’” And so it was immediately a double meaning. I like that it’s in the past tense. I feel like that’s interesting. And I like the idea of something that used to be good, like it was stellar, and it sounds kind of sarcastic. There’s just a lot that you can kind of ascribe to it, but I don’t think our 14-year-old selves were ascribing a ton of meaning to it at the time.
