Barbara Stanisława Trzetrzelewska (born September 30, 1954), known professionally as Basia, is a Polish sophisti-pop musician active since 1969. Cutting her teeth as a member of various local bands in the Polish People’s Republic before immigrating to the United Kingdom, she rose to prominence as a member of Matt Bianco, whose Latin-tinged take on jazz fusion brought cult success throughout Europe during the 1980s. In 1986, Basia left the group to establish a solo career, establishing a similar cult following in the United States this time. She remains active to this day, earning multiple accolades in her home country for her work promoting Polish culture abroad.
